Product Description

Amelie: Original Soundtrack Recording

Amazon.com

This sunny comic fable from idiosyncratic director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (City of Lost Children, Alien Resurrection, Delicatessen) boasts any number of intimate charms, not the least of which is Yann Tiersen's warmly inviting score. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Tiersen's work and training may have masterfully encompassed classical, pop, and rock, but his delightful Amélie music proves he is slave to none. In this, his fourth soundtrack, Tiersen displays an impressive command of idiom and melodic subtlety that's rightfully drawn comparisons to the great Nino Rota. With a Paris-set story driven by blossoming love, the composer frequently leans on the familiar Parisian street accordion motif as a starting point. If that sounds clichéd, it's anything but; Tiersen's delicate touch incorporates Gypsy flourishes, classical string ensembles, electronics, stark and lovely solo piano, and even minimalist technique--often in the same charming cue. The result is music that manages to sound variously breezy, fresh, and contemporary, yet somehow comfortably familiar. Amélie is a warm, postmodernist score that never forgets where its heart lies. --Jerry McCulley

Love this soundtrack. Playful and uplifting.

With all due respect to the talented Mme. Tautou, Yann Tiersen's beautiful soundtrack is the key to "Amelie's" magic. Tiersen is a phenomenon in his native France where he conducts riveting live performances and has become arranger of choice for singers like the stylish chantuese of French pop, Francoiz Bruet. Tierson's score to "Amelie" draws heavily on the Musette tradition. Musette orginated in Bastille district cabarets and features a cornemustte, a squeezebox accordin, an instrument introduced to Parisians by immigrant Italians. The use of accordion was incorporated into most early 20th century French renditions of waltzes, polkas, marches, paso dobles (2-steps), tangos and swing jazz. Musette is a stew of Gallic, Italian, Gypsy and even German folk traditions. Tiersen adds some Erik Satie inspired minimalist piano solos, but with a smirk; he plays them on a toy piano. Most of the solo instuments are played by Tierson with charming touches like tinkling chimes, a rag time banjo, or unanticipated clarinet solo. Many compare Tiersen's work on "Amelie" to the brillant Nino Rota, musical director for Frederico Fellini's films. Rota's soundtracks were the key to understanding the mood and the ideas of the often unscrutable Fellini. I try to imagine "Amelie" without Tiersen's sountrack and I can't.

Composing movie soundtracks is becoming a dying art. Modern movie soundtracks are nothing more than a grab bag of the latest hits by the coolest alt. rock bands, but have little to do with what is happening on the screen. These soundtracts are nothing more than a sophisticated form of product placement. This charming and uniquely French sountrack is a breath of fresh air.

I origninally heard a snippet of this on a Windom Hill compilation of film theme songs. It wasn't even performed by Yann Tiersen, who is tremendously talented. I couldn't get the melody out of my head. I ordered the original soundtrack and I couldn't be happier. One night, coming home from work, I got off the train, and heard a french tune wafting across the platform. A sweet and gentle homeless guy, Jerry, with a bashed in accordian, was playing for change. For a while I would see Jerry at the end of my work day. I'd say play me my french song please. I'd sit on the bench with him and he'd oblige with two or three. Then he didn't come back anymore. I missed sitting on the bench with Jerry and being serenaded! In liu of Jerry, Amelie does the trick. I listen to it before I set off on my day and it helps me put the right foot forward! It's so joyous and uplifting. I love the toy piano as much as the accordian. It's great music to day dream by. It swirls around in my mind, and makes me feel like a kid again. I haven't seen the film, silly, but the soundtrack is marvelous!

Last year I was in a metro in Paris and someone started playing a beautiful french music in accordion. I followed the music and lost the station just to hear the music to the end. I didn't recognized the music at first, but it filled me with joy and I knew I had listened it before, but I didn't know where. I kept the music in mind. It carries the lovely mood of Paris.
Months later that music still ressonated inside my memories and I finally remembered: it was "La Valse D'Amelie". Without thinking, I bought immediatelly this CD. All the musics are ingenious and passionate. Its a wonderful and indispensable CD.
Just for the purpose of situating this review according to your own tasting, could be useful to know that I love classical music, jazz and movie soundtracks.
Other lovely soundtrack you may like is
Pride & Prejudice  from Dario Marianelli.

Warning: will make you want to learn the accordion, wear cute clothes, go traipsing around France, and have a charmed life.

Perfect dinner music, appetizer music, dessert music (basically anything involving wine and cheese), even driving music. Makes you feel like you're seeing the world through rose-colored glasses. Basically, like Amelie herself. If you liked the movie at all (and who doesn't, really), you'll like the soundtrack just as much for giving you the same warm feeling.

Also, try Yann Tiersen's sheet music for piano if you play. Beautiful, simple, and elegant.

I know I'm piling on here, but this soundtrack is a true gem--it's rocketed up to the top of my all time favorite CD's. Accordions: it sounds Paris, it sounds eastern European, it sounds ecstatic, it sounds melancoly. Don't underestimate the accordions, this album is a densely layered amazingly complex work. The sounds are totally unique yet readily accessible. It's one of those rare CD's the more you listen to it the more you like it.

The album is also superbly produced, subtle and nuanced. Tiersen defies genres. It doesn't matter what kind of music you like, if you have any brain at all, you'll like this album.

Besides that it ROCKS. I get so into it I almost drive my car off the road. Dangerous. Really, I can't say enough--bite the bullet, bring this CD home. Revel.

I love the movie Amelie, but realized that one of the reasons I keep popping it into the DVD player was because of the narration and the MUSIC. Therefore, purchasing the Soundtrack made sense, and it was better than I expected. First, the songs are beautiful and make for great background music when you are driving, having a dinner party, or working. Secondly, I've never found music that makes me smile as much as Mr. Yann Tiersen's work does. Third, the soundtrack on Amazon is half as much as Mr. Tiersen's other works, but just as good.

Me encanta.

Espero que haya sido útil mi valoración

L'album è molto gradevole e si ascolta con piacere.
